Favor and Fault

I note his every fault
As I justify my favor
The evil he deserves
I’m glad he’s not my neighbor

He is dirty and he smells
He is ragged and quite rude
He is undisciplined unclean
Has a nasty attitude

No wonder he’s a failure
I earn the good that comes my way
He is obviously at fault
God favors me is what I say

Because I do what’s good
Avoid the evil that I see
I know God looks from heaven
Ignores him, and favors me

But to think so is truly sinful
For my Jesus teaches this
We live by grace unmerited favor
This simple truth I do still miss

By wanting to justify my favor
And remind him how far he’s fallen
I forget I am a sinner saved by grace
And hence I don’t fulfill my calling

To seek redemption and restoring
Dearest Father I truly plead
Father forgive his faults and failures
Show him favor, fulfill his need

Luke 18:11-14 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
